TIFF Resolution Downgrade

I am trying to downgrade a TIFF from 600 dpi to 300 dpi. I did `convert -density 300x300 hi.tif lo.tif`, but it looks like it only changed the XResolution and YResolution tags without "removing" pixels from the image. In other words, I end up with an image that is double the original inch size.

Is there a different tool that I can try?

Give ImageMagick a look, might be able to handle it for you:

dpi: dots per inch, double the inch size clearly reduces dpi by half.
If you want a smaller image, try -scale 320 for example. This will set the
width of the image to 320 and scale the height acordingly.
You can also try gimp for example to do the stuff in a more visual fashion. If you only want to reduce size for storage you could also convert it to png for example which should do a better job at comressing (takes longer though).
