Thunderbird sends incoming mail to trash

All incoming messages , ignoring message filters and not determined to be junk by junkmail controls, are going straight to trash. At one point, after checking all the filters and finding no filter changes for displayed messages, I ran message filters on trash folder and everything just disappeared even though there were a number of items which should have been routed to other folders. Getting real tired of having to go to trash to read my new mail.

Couple of days ago when I turned my box on, I was greeted with a desktop background which I had never seen and was unable to locate the source in my file system. It was a green screen with embossed frogs, fawns and penguins shapes. Investigating found that the KDE box and root_logo backgrounds had also changed to this color and background scheme. This occurred about the same time as my TBird problems started.

Can't find a reason for either problem. Wonder if they,re related. This is really frustrating and I sure could use some help!

Have had no replies to similar post on Thunderbird support forums after nearly 24 hours.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Firstly, back up all your mail files and get them somewhere safe - preferably off the machine (onto CD or something).

I think that my first port of call would be to download Thunderbird anew from http://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird and re-install it. (Just in case your current copy is corrupt.)

If this doesn't work, I'd be inclined to suspect corruption in your mail folders somewhere. I've had Mozilla do VERY strange things before, after moving to a new machine. I had to dump a couple of configuration files; Mozilla created new ones once run and the problem went away.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thunderbird sends incoming mail to trash

Thanks for the suggestions, kbcnetau. Upgraded to the latest version of Thunderbird and still had the problem, but the corrupted mail folder idea sent me on a different tack in searching the Thunderbird support forum.

Found a post that recommended going to ~/.thunderbird/default folder and deleting the file xul.mfasl which would be regenerated the next time thunderbird was restarted. Two or three restarts later the problem was still there, but this morning everything is working fine with no other changes to the system.

Thanks again.

Now you say it, I think that's what I had to do with Mozilla to get it going again; I think that there was another file I had to get rid of, but that was one to do with web browsing.

(Note that that deleting xul.mfasl will only work if Thunderbird is not running at the time, otherwise the corrupt version just gets recreated.)

Glad that you're working again!
