Thoughts about the Desktop cashew button in KDE

I am certainly not the only one that finds the "Desktop" button in the upper right-hand corner of KDE workspaces utterly useless. Especially seeing as how there is a cashew button on the right-hand side of the taskbar -- which duplicates functionality -- AND you can right-click on the desktop, and get the same options.

When I first encountered the button when KDE4 was released, I always felt like this button was going somewhere. But, alas, it seems not...

I had hoped that the button would activate a workspace alternate, or overlay where you could stash your widgets without permanently clogging up your workspace.

I envisioned where you could have say the dictionary widget and the lcd weather widget and the comic strip widget and many others on the "alternate/overlay" workspace view. Once you clicked the Desktop button, POOF! the widgets would appear in all their glorious splendor. And, when you were ready for your clean workspace again, you'd click the button a 2nd time, and POOF! the widgets would be gone.

The button could even be made to cycle through all three iterations of your workspace: Normal, Overlay, Alternate.

Some widgets are novel or useful, but garish and not terribly nice to look at. Using an alternate or overlay view would definitely cause me to use or explore more widgets than I presently do.

Thoughts anyone else? Am I just missing something?

The cashew on the taskbar disappears when you block widgets. That said, I also wish I knew a way to remove the cashew from the screen.
