The problem of conneting to the Internet

Hello

I am new to Linux. I learned a lot now, however. I successfully installed Mandrake Linux 10.0. Everything work fine except the login to the Internet. I have a broadband connection. My ISP has given me a modem. It is an 'Alcatel' modem. It is 5 or 6 years old. It works perfectly with Windows 2000.

I have made a partition for Linux too. When the computer starts, I could select either Linux or Windows. Of course, this takes place via LILO. I have no problems whether to select Linux or Windows.

Now I only work with Linux. I love it. The login to the Internet is a hell of a task for me. I need a firewall.

i) I selected SSH

2) Do I have to select ADSL modem or PPPoE? I have a ADSL modem. I always get the message 'cannot login'.

I deeply appreciate your help to solve the problem.

you can try configuring pppoe. From the terminal window

adsl-setup

adsl-start and adsl-stop to establish/terminate a connection.

check the Roaring Penguin site for documentation

How do I find the PPPoE?

I looked at the terminal and wrote 'ls' command. It didn't find.

Then I wrote the command 'find PPPoE without any success. I am new to this business. Would you help me please again.

I wrote the 'du' and 'df' command too. The 'du' command found a lot of stuff. Not the PPPoE.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is the 'du' commands output.
By the way, the word firefox comes from the browser I installed.

Does your ISP use pppoe? In the UK it's pppoa so that's all I'm used to. I did (briefly) install Mandrake 10 and it didn't seem to be any trouble to setup the speedtouch connection with the Mandrake Control Centre. Just follow the instructions and let the wizard walk you through it. The speedtouch experts can be reached with an email to the speedtouch mailing list speedtouch@ml.free.fr see http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/links/index.html

You can use the command below from a terminal window

# rpm -qa|grep ppp

check whether rp-pppoe is listed.

Also, if you can tell us here how you connect from windows - whether you use some software from your ISP ... OR you just get windows running and you are on the net (no logging in ,etc).

If it is that you just get on to windows and you are on the net without any login process, you simply need to configure Mandrake to get a DHCP address. If logging in is involved, you may need the pppoe package.

I thank ppuru and Andrew. A friend of mine said it shouldn't be PPPoE. It should be ADSL. The biggest obstacle is my ISP doesn't support Linux. Only Windows!

They are clueless as to Linux issues. When I run Windows, it works smoothly. They support and optimize everything for Windows.

I guess in the UK and the USA it will be a commonplace to support Linux; I mean ISP support people knows Linux too.

I will come back to you again within next 48 hours.

Gins can you check with your ISP if they have any special procedure to activate linux connectivity.

I struggled with my ISP's tech support for almost a week, after the case got escalated, they resolved it - they simply wanted one email from me requesting connectivity through linux.
