The Evolution of the Linux OS

Hey everyone. I hope I posted this is the right area. I am trying to find some information on how Linux has changed over the years, more importantly I guess would be how Linux has gone from being command based to having GUIs like KDE and Gnome. I am very new to Linux, and having trouble trying to find information on the changes Linux has undergone. If anybody knows a good article or anything, will you please share it with me? Thank you very much!

Now I feel like a complete idiot. I tried using linux and evolution in the most possible ways I could think of and all I got was information on the email client. I never though of using the word History =/

Thank you for that. The first hit was just what I was looking for.
