The common application in Windows really compatible Linux too.

Probably newbie is wondering what application he/she can run in Linux OS. So I would like to share something inside my laptop to them.

I am a stubborn IT person, so I always keeping make my Linux laptop same level /compatible with Windows XP (In corporate network or home use), below is what I'd customized in my Linux laptop successfuly(5 * mean good, 1 * mean lousy):-
  1. Office -Ms Office 2003 + CXoffice ****
  2. Web Development - Dreamweaver/Flash 8 + Wine ****
  3. ERP - Compiere ERP 2.5.3b (jdk1.5) + Oracle Server/Client *****
  4. Game -Warcraft 3/Ragnarok Online MMORPG (Wine/Cedega) ****
  5. Web Conferencing -Maractech (Java with proper webcam configured) *****
  6. Video Processing - Mainactor (native) *****
  7. CAD - QCad + dwg2dxf (native) ***
  8. Audio - audacity + xmms + many-many (native) ****
  9. Graphics - Picasa, gimp + (Native) ****
  10. Email Client - Thunderbird (Corporate mail) and Evolution (Gmail) (native) ****
  11. IM - Gaim/Amsn (native) ****
  12. Visualization - VMWare (Best if you want to simulate a windows AD network!) ***** (native)
  13. Vpn - Cisco vpn client + gnome-terminal (native) ****
  14. Development - eclipse + jdk1.5 + mysql 5 +many-many (native) *****
  15. Web browser - Firefox, IE (wine), opera (I found it is high performance than firefox) *****
  16. File Syncronize(Like offline files in windows) - shell script with rsync and auto detect whether in company network (Own shell script) *****
  17. Auto login wifi network, at my house, wife's house, company place (own shell script) **
  18. File recovery - autopsy(Native, however I'd never success to recover a file).**
  19. Network tool - nmap, nc, ettercap, ethereal, etherape, whois and etc (native)*****
  20. TV - mythtv (Native, however there is no driver for my PCMCIA tv card in Linux) **
  21. Printing/Scanning - No problem, linux have too much driver, I recommend you buy HP products (native).***
  22. Map - Google earth (native)****
  23. Server - So many server run in my laptop, apache, vsftp, samba, and etc(native).*****
  24. Bittorent - Limewire (jre1.5)*****
  25. Mind mapping -freemind (jre)***
  26. Ldap browser - Jxplorer****
However, Iknow it is not good enough and there is much more thing going to do. Below is some application I going to do:-
  1. CAM (I can't find a really stable/suitable 1 in Linux)
  2. Samba 4 active directory replacement (Application not yet ready)
  3. Sketchup like software
  4. More MMORPG game (I prefer asian style graphic)
  5. PS2 emulator
  6. Adobe Acrobat (Not reader)
  7. and much much more.
Above item is some common application IT personnel will use daily, I think it should be enough to say in Linux OS can do almost everything what we want!!

Regards,
Ks
