The best way to get Xgl up and running?
 

One of the few goals in Linux I have not accomplished is, in one way or another, to get Xgl to work. Up until now I've hit nothing but stone walls.

My first plan was to try the Kororaa Xgl live CD. In a perfect world, that would've been the best way to try out all of the features of the interface. Not in my case, however, it wouldn't load correctly. It started hanging after it tried to write to the tmpfs, and that was with the kernels that booted on my machine at all. At the forums, I read something about the possibility of the .iso image being corrupt. Perhaps one day I'll get around to downloading another image to see if this is in fact so, but I've put it on the back burner for the moment.

So then I tried a multitude of other distributions, including Debian Etch (my favorite so far), and Arch. Unfortunately, the steps outlined on Sonique's Etch HOWTO did not work out for me. With Arch, I got a lot closer, but it still didn't quite work. SUSE is a last resort because I would like to wait until the final version of 10.1 is released before I burn an .iso with one of the few CD-Rs I have left, and same goes with (K)ubuntu Dapper. Next up I suppose is Gentoo, which I'm sure is excellent for compiling software from source.

I was wondering if any of you good people had other ideas. What would be the best way to get Xgl running, and what distribution should I try to get it running on?

oi mate, i had the same problem with the Kororaa XGL live cd at 1st with that huge code dump during boot-up because it couldnt write somewhere. i solved it. all i had to do was boot manually by typing at the boot console when the cd 1st loads and the thing works like a charm for me now. getting it to install on the HDis another thing though :confused:

Unfortunately, that did not work for me. First of all, the default kernel won't even boot on my machine. I have to use the kororaa-scsi kernel, which, as I said above, hung when it tried to write on the tmpfs. Appending

did not effect this behavior at all. Any other thoughts?

did u use the scsi kernal with the code i gave or just the normal kernel ? i used the default one : kororaa ide=nodma. if that doesnt work it might be hardware problem, can you post your hardware config here ?

My current hardware configuration is:

- 2.1 GHz Intel Celeron processor
- Intel 865P/ICH4 chipsets
- 40GB and 8GB IDE hard drives
- 512MB RAM

hmm, ur hardware looks good but the graphics card might be a problem. check out the forums on kororaa's website, they have a list of graphics chipsets that do work. i had trouble setting it up on a friends computer who had an ATI 9000 but another friend had an intel i810 graphics chip and it ran beautifully on his comp.

Ahh, I forgot to mention my graphics card. I use a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200.

darn, it should deffinately work with that sort of config. all i can suggest is try the kororaa forums at their website, the Kororaa designers/admins Chriss and Matt generally respond themselves to ppls questions there in 1-2 days max so try asking there cos the problem is beyond me :confused:
