Question TFT Monitor Problem

I've recently added a 17inch TFT monitor to me RH9 machine. Now when I boot up I'm getting a blank monitor at the final stage of bootup. Is there anyway to change the monitor settings?
Also it is configured to boot straight into Gnome bypassing the command prompt. I presume to do any work I will need to get to the command prompt. Can I set the machine so I can type in startx rather then go straight to the GUI?
Thanks

Yes but I can't get to the file because of my monitor problem.
How do I work that out?

If you have a resque floppy or cd you may be able to boot up with that, mount your hd and then edit the file. I am pretty sure
distro cd such as redhat's can be booted up in rescque mode.
Your TFT should be fine in text mode.
