Terminal windows in X don't work

If I try to run xterm or gnome-terminal from either GNOME or Fluxbox with my user account, I get a blank window with a flashing cursor, and never receive a shell prompt. If I log in as root, it works.

I just compiled and installed the 2.4.20-19.9 kernel (btw, that was the first time I've ever attempted to compile my own kernel from source). I've obviously screwed something up in the process. Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong? TIA!
