terminal problem

I can't see everything in the terminal. when Im at /home and run "mkdir apps", I can see the dir using KDE, but when I run "ls" at /home, I cant see anything, not even "." and "..". I can "cd" to "apps" as usual. I can even extract a package at the terminal, even though I cant see it. If Im root I can see everything. I thought it was my ATI card that was messing around so I started to install the driver from ATI. When the setup menu should appear the terminal was all blank, same when I run apt-setup. the "man-pages" are missing words, well I can't see all the words.

This is what I see when I run "man apt"(I have left the blank lines out):

Code:

apt - Advanced Package Tool
APT  is  a  management system for software packages.  It is still under
development; the snazzy front ends are not yet available.  In the mean-
 time, please see      (8).

This is what I get when I copy and paste the text:

Code:

apt - Advanced Package Tool
SYNOPSIS
      apt
DESCRIPTION
APT  is  a  management system for software packages.  It is still under
development; the snazzy front ends are not yet available.  In the mean-
      time, please see apt-get(8).

does anyone have a clue what is wrong?
