telnet problem (not able to login as any user)

I am having problem in telnetting to my machine. I am having mandrake 10. Login screen appears but it does not accepts the login/password. I have make sure that I am giving correct login and password.

Any help

Suggestion, drop telnet and set up ssh.
Telnet is insecure and outdated.
