Telnet console problem

Hi,

I have installed Redhat v9.x on my office system. Full installation of linux was done.

I have observed that when I use telnet program of Microsoft Windows, junk character are shown on my screen. If I type man the part of the document contains junk character.

If i use Windows hyper terminal then also the same problem arises. Also the background color becomes black and forground color becomes blue. Its very difficult to read.

If I work directly on the physical system everything is ok.

I don't know what is the problem also how to rectify this problem.

I have even tried changing the tty setings. Still it doesn't work

Please help me.

Regards,
Raja

First of all the usual warning message you're likely to get from most users : Don't use telnet ! It's generally nastier than any mother-in-law. Install ssh on you linux box and download putty to connect to it in windows. Great program.

The junk characters in your man pages are easily explained. Man uses control characters to put some words in bold. Your telnet can't handle this and thus displays the literal control characters.

I'm not sure on how to fix this. You could try typing the following right after you connect to the linux box : export TERM="vt100". I think this should let your programs know that your console doesn't support the fancy things.

But now how should I resolve the color problem

The export TERM=vt100 works to some extent.

AFAIK this is because the W2k telnet client doesn't implement the
full VT52/VT100 terminal specs (well, how could anyone expect MS software
to work properly?). You may want to give Terraterm a try.
