How do you determine the task switching time on linux?

Is there a utility that I can used that will show time?

Thanks

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking?

If you do top, or ps -A you will see how much
time (CPU slices) each process used since it was
started ... not sure what you mean when you talk
about "switching time" ....

Cheers,
Tink

I guess I am asking How much time does it take for a task
to shutdown and how much time does it take for a task to start.

Thanks

You can use the time command to measure that amount of time that a process takes from start to finish.

that will give you the time taken for execution, unless there is some argument to pass to 'time' which gives what he wants.

i believe he is looking for the switching time between processes (which would mean the time slice allotted to a process?), which is set by the scheduler. 2.4, i believe had sched.c

and by 'shutdown" and "start" , do you mean for one particular process? or do you mean "shutdown" for one and "start" for another.

I still don't understand ... can you give a
verbose example?
Like, How long does it take to start Mozilla from the click
on the mozilla icon on my taskbar, until it's actually
usable?

Cheers,
Tink
