tar: Unexpected EOF in archive

I had created a tar ball of my home folder. But after formatting the system when I tried to untar it, it is showing the following error:

Code:
tar -xf home.tar
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Please help me to somehow recover my home folder !!

you might want run fsck and check dmesg for dma errors. I had this problem and my disk was going bad.

what to do about recovering from the tar you have now I don't know. sorry

Thanks to both of you for bothering to reply!

The reason of tar ball corruption was the scp command. I had placed this tar ball on a companion's computer. When he scp'ed the tar ball back to me, I received it in the corrupted form.

Today he again scp'ed me the same, and this time I received it error free.

Hence I have recovered my data and learnt not to trust the scp command.
