Hi,

I was able to rule out tar as the culprit. I upgraded tar to 1.15.1 version from Dec. 2004. The test script still fails. The problem is with compress! On my box compress --version returns 'compress - sharutils 4.2c'. I did find a patch "sharutils-4.3.80-4.3.81.diff", however, it's not the right one. Searching for upgrade for 'compress' did not yield anything. Perhaps it's not worth gumshoe, it's covered by patents US 4,464,650 & 4,558,302. This goes to show how lame patented software really is, there's no bug fix, and if the software was patched, is it still covered by the patent? The original idea may be.
