Taking sound samples || Debian 3.1, gnome, alsa

Hello, I have been trying to take some random sound samples of movies that, imo, has had good lines and such, but when I try to use KRec or grecord, they can't find anything from Totem or XMMS/Amarok. What might be the problem and what specs do I need to post.

install jackd

then use media player that supports jack and use any jack-aware capture program and connect it to the player output, then just hit rec whenever you want to record a bit.
