Tab-stopping in shell session

I have a weird issue. This has happened to me a few times and I don't really know the cause. When I setup this server I could tab stop directories IE

cd /et(tab) and it would complete to /etc/

Now for some reason if I hit the same command

cd /et(tab) it goes to /etc

This being /etc with a space after it, from there I must backspace and put a / after that. It gets very annoying..

Can anyone shed light on this issue?

Try configure keyboard mapping. Check also special key assignments if Tab is identified to special action.
If still persists change keyboard module.

I've seen this too on my Debin Lenny.
It happens only & always when the directory is a mount-point, but I haven't gone deeper into it.
(To be a bit clearer, when a partition is mounted on let's say "/mnt/storage" I can tab-complete fine on /mnt but /mnt/storage happens exactly what you described.)

Now looking a little deeper into this, I find that it only happens when it is a smb-mount!
I've checked on partitions residing on hard drive, nfs-mounts and smb-mounts.
But Ceefus, you say it happens with /etc, surely that directory isn't a network mount - or was it just an example?
