System Temporarily Hangs with display saying.....

Occasionally and when I shut my Linux box down i get a series of symbols such as these: [ > [> [> [> [> interdispersed with the boot up information why is this?

Also when browsing the net the machine temporarily hangs .........the only way out I found is to go into Vi editor ...where Im presented on screen with the message:>>>$ display all 3286 possibilities {Y or N } I press N and the problem resolves itself.

Does anyone know whats occuring here and why ....more importantly how can I fix it?

Thanks

Jefx

It sounds like there is a rouge proccess somewhere or you have inadvertantly sent a double tab command to a bash prompt.

Try running top and monitoring which proccesses are using the most resources when this happens.
