Switching to X turns on the NumLock LED but not the state

I got a new computer. When I switch to X the NumLock LED comes on, but the NumLock state stays off.

SNAP!

Got that too - press the button longer. You may need to do it 3 times: once & the light goes on; again & light goes off; third time light & numlock come on. Get used to it.

This is about the tenth computer I've run Linux on, the first to exhibit this behavior (It's a Toshiba Satellite, bought used.) I don't see why I should have to get used to it. I notice setleds doesn't work in an xterm.

Personally, I never bothered. This is the third pc I've owned (out of 3) to exhibit that behaviour, which I view as a minor irritation. I believe it is linked to the console states. Xterms and the like run bash, mouse control, graphics, etc are all different. Text mode is very uncooperative with ttys, which are descended from 80x25 'termilals' on serial ports. About the best is ncurses.

Sure knock yourself out, dig down deep, find your problem(s) write & test the patches, and I just may apply them, if I'm bothered.

Code:
setleds -num < /dev/tty11
in startx solved the problem. tty11 is tty X uses.
