Switching terminals locks up system

After reinstalling the 32bit version of SuSE 9.1 vice the 64bit version that was on, I found that when I switch to a different terminal [ctrl-alt-f2] etc; my machine completely locks up. The /etc/inittab getty settings are correct. I switch and can see the output of the /etc/issue file, but then the box completely locks up. Any clues where to look first? I haven't seen any strange entries in the logs.

Hmmm, do you have agetty running on each of the terminals? I don't know what's the default number of terminals for SuSe but in Slackware there is 6 of them. Try running 'top' and see if there is agetty running for each one of the terminals.
Just an idea,
Max

Are you running in runlevel 3 or 5 ?

I found that when running in runlevel 5 (X) the computer would freeze as it was trying to bring up the login screen. Try changing to runlevel 3 (Text only, startx to start the window manager), and see what happens then.

I hope this helps
