Switching languages at boot time in GRUB

When you boot using GRUB, you can hit F2 to get a list of languages. I have been trying without success to add to this list. In particular, I need to support Japanese and Chinese (simplified and traditional). I am using SUSE 10.1. It was installed with Japanese and Chinese selected as secondary languages, but GRUB doesn't seem to know anything about them. Anybody have a clue how to make this dog work?

Is there any particular reason why you need to choose the language at bootup? It's pretty easy to have a multilingual setup these days.

I am trying to put Asian language support into a LiveDVD. Setting the LANG environmnet variable hasn't helped. Nothing I do with the locale settings seems to be working. So, I thought I might have more success choosing the language at boot time.
