Swap Sla/Mas HDD's after WinXP install
 

Okay, yet another dual boot post, but this ones different or I havent found it at least.

I got a new idea and am wondering if it will work.

What I was going to do is install XP (dropped the 98 garbage), on my master hard disk.

Next open up the case, swap the hdd order (master <-> slave), and install Ubuntu 5.1 on the "new" master disk.

Now I know how to add items to lilo/grub list, my question: Will windows have a fit after I switch the drives. I guess it really doesn't matter, but I do prefer windows to be on the slave disk being as it kept me in agonizing slavery for years.

Think its good?

why does it matter whether one is slave or master, if they are both going to boot anyway?

they don't care, why should you ;)

seriously, xp will *probably* give you a hissy fit.. but try it anyway.

if it bitches, just make it the master (even tho linux is always the real 'master' of os's :) lol

thanks for the reply, I actually came to that conclusion myself realizing I was giving myself more work than it was worth. Got XP back on...damn, it's sad how fast I can get a windows install exactly how I want it. After the setup, my personal set up took me 5 minutes...you know getting rid of the "ahh...how cute" look and making it look like what it is...AN OS.

Next step..ubuntu.

By the way, what are some opinions of that distro? I've heard more good than bad, but I never see any comparison or reasons as to why people like/dislike it. I used the live CD to sample it and came to the conclusion that it was by far and wide a better setup than mandriva. It seemed pretty quick, and I know it will be even faster running off a hard disk. Plus it was my first encounter with Gnome, which immeadiatley made me go back to my mandriva install and scrap KDE, which I haev come to call Kids Desktop Experience (yes i know what it really means). It was almost TOO easy to use, and not quite as stable as I had hoped, which was still 40 trillion times more stable than any windows version I have used (nearly all of them, seriously - starting with Windows 2.0 when i was a kid, a lot of people don't even know that existed)

Thanks again and again for all the help from this forum. Reminds me of Majorgeeks.com, kinda the windows counterpart of this forum...very helpful, very knowledgable.
