(Running SuSE 7.1)

If I already have my swap 'partition' set to be a directory on the same partition as the rest of my installation, how can I set it to be a different partition instead?

I don't know what you mean by `set your swap partition to be a directory...` cause the swap partition doesn't contain a filesystem and cannot be mounted. Anyway, to change your swap partition just allocate some space, then do mkswap /dev/sdb8 (<- change the dev/... stuff to suit your needs) and then change/add a line to your /etc/fstab file:
Code:
/dev/sdb8 none swap sw 0 0
Finally do a swapon -a and you'll be set.

I think that when he says directory, he means a swap file. You can use a special file for swap space. You just have to tell swapon to use the file instead of a directory. I have never used swap files before, so I don't know how exactly they are enabled on bootup. Is it in the fstab file or the rc scripts? You will have to search for where swapon is being called on it and disable it, or it will be used along with the new swap parition you create.
