Also, are those empty windows partitions waiting for you to install or is windows already installed and when was the last time you booted into it? I am pretty sure linux won't care that your first partition is an extended one but I'd almost guarantee windows would puke all over that.

windows xp is already installed, i got no problem to boot windows from grub. the last time i boot windows is just several min. ago, the booting problem of grub is still there. anyway, i can get into linux through suse-dvd, so it must be a problem of grub.
