this is not a question about suse, it will be the same for all distros. try using a better thread title such as "stopping / starting samba"

/etc/init.d/smb stop

or

service smb stop

Actually in Debian, it's /etc/init.d/samba [stop|start]

And in Redhat's braindead init system, I believe it's something like /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb [stop|start]

most of the time redhat have the soft link from /etc/rc.d/init.d to normal /etc/init.d which brings you back to step one. as for the debian one... well not exactly a world of difference... :-S

We're not hiring right now, though I do sometimes farm out work to third parties when we're busy. Mail me your skillset and if anything comes up, we can talk.

skillset? erm.... well that's the thing that's getting at me... no official experience of anything, and not sure how to get into it in general.. The step between simply answering questions here and doing your work in an official capacity seems pretty large... guess it's a case of a dozen oreilly books and starting on a helpdesk or similar... thanks.

Reading O'Reilly books, man pages, docs and HOWTOs is all I do, though I've been at it for quite a few years now.

Also You can try

You can also start and stop samba or other services on Suse using Yast2 -> System -> Runlevel Editor ->Runlevel Properties
