suse kernel compilation

My machine is running SuSE 8.1 and now I want
to run kernel 2.4.20.
I downloaded the kernel, compiled it and installed it
but when I restart the computer I can only use
the "vga=normal" lilo option (or the screen will
turn black)
and "startx" fails because of graphics error.
I can't even start sax2 (the X configuration program)

X works perfectly with my old kernel.

Have I forgotten any kernel option or what could be wrong?

i am typing this to you from my suse with linux 2.4.20 laptop so i know it works.

what version was your old kernel?
have you tried vga=ask? it should give you a list of valid modes on startup.
startx should print out a few pages of stuff when you run it, check it for some error messages.
