get over it. don't want to pay for SuSE, don't use it. maybe you expect someone from suse to fly in from germany and hand deliver it to you. maybe pay you to use it.

Is SuSe the only clever company to do this?!? Are the others fools to distribute their software??
Hey, I shouldn't have to buy my car I'm driving, I'll just take one for free and if it last 10 years, I'll pay GM some money for doing a great job.....

I'm afraid your concept is totally wrong on how things work. Suse is making a building a product to sell, bottom line. And they do make contributions to the kernel, they make drivers and all these other things that come along with their distro and make available for others to use as well.

Did you know, I could make copies of just the Linux Kernel on cd, then turn around and sell them without making any other modifications. Though the price has to be reasonable, but you can do that you know.

Go read the GPL before you babble some more, you'll learn something in the process. I'm not trying to be rude, I just don't agree with your prior statements.

Regards.

I bought and have used two distributions from SuSE, 6.1 and now 8.2 (in the interim I used Mandrake 8.1 and 8.2).

One major reason I like SuSE is that it is easily available. They have good distribution channels in that I don't have to download ISOs to get it working (my broadband connection is only at the office, is only for work and I have to run an XPee powered laptop with that). The other major reason I like it is because the install apps and system tools are fairly robust and reliable (Mandrake was not as much so). You may disagree.

I have no qualms with paying my $80 (US) for it. IT's a hell of a better bargain than what I would pay for the same amount of software in Windoze. And I have the satisfaction that knowing the majority of my code running on my machine (the important parts, anyway) is OpenSource and can be modified to my heart's content if I couldn't get it working any longer. I also have the knowledge that my data is owned by ME and nobody can tell me I have to upgrade if I don't want to (so,... no planned obsolecence). If I was going to install a distro on a vast array of commercial machines (I'm not in IT, by the way), I would go with a distro with no restrictions whatsoever on copying. SuSE 8.2 (x86) is perfect for a small server or a stand-alone desktop solution (needs a little bit of work in the wine/winex gaming area thouogh). IMHO, at least.

I perfectly see you guys' point. And I understand why you think this way. But I have the right to think whatever suits me, and I am simply expressing my opinions.
As to your car analogy. We pay for the GM, yet there is one reason the case is not comparable. GM doesn't go borrow the engine from Saab, the wheels from Toyota, then add some bolts here and there and sell it. They build everything, thus they deserve the money.
Now I am not quite contributing to the community, I know. I simply do some translating tasks, that's all I can do. I am not a programmer (just a dummy), but in a couple of years, I'll be one. And then it will be my turn to write software, help others, be a better tester etc.. I didn't migrate to linux simply because it was free (as in beer). I am using it because I perfectly concur with the underlying philosophy. Software has to be free (as in speech, to pursue the trite comparison).
For your information, I had the original version of SuSe 7.1 Boxed. I had payed a lot of money to it. And here's what came with it. 7CDs and a DVD (so far so good), some useless books (three of them precisely) which I could have easily downloaded from tldp.org, some stickers and a chameleon pin. Now if these guys really believed in the philosophy, they could have published a lite version for us, experienced users, with just the cd, for a less amount of money (they still will be getting their money see). Plus they would go along with the GNU philosophy. So there are ways to find a way.
I am not trying to change any of you guys opinions about SuSe. I know you will try to defend it, to the extent of being rude. I don't mind. This is simply a manifesto, for the conscious Linux users.

then why aren't you running debian? thats where all the holyer-than-thou, nobody better make a dime on this, crowd are.
just because the kernel is GPL'ed, doesn't mean every app has to be.

I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you, graffitici. The SuSE developers do alot more than you give them credit for, including packaging, development of YaST and their administration tools. Not to mention the contributions they make to KDE, the kernel itself, and various other open source projects.

As rshaw mentioned, if you're one of those holier-than-thou free-as-in-beer is as important as free-as-in-speech zealots, then Debian is probably the distribution for you. Redhat is not exactly a non-profit organization, you know.

(Note: I'm not trying to knock or stereotype Debian users. It's a great distribution and all types of people use it. But Debian's philosophy seems most compatible with his own).

As you can see from the number of posts that I have made.....Im as newbie as they come. Ive followed this thread since I first visited (Saturday I think) and although Im not an experienced Linuxer i would just like to add.......
I tried SuSe 8.0 on this Tosh laptop and had a few problems (the old Keyboard Dbltap/ACPI/Nvidia driver..etc) and decided today to invest in SuSe 8.2 Personal Edition. For a beginner I have got to say I would recommend SuSe8.2 because
1. The install and config was very easy and IT WORKED!. (Im posting from my laptop that I installed this afternoon) No I havent tried ANY other distros (picking up the lingo pretty quick dont U think)
2. It cost a "measly" EUR 49.00 which for handbook, disks, online update I think is very reasonable.
3. As a beginner you dont have to delve into the Terminal at all (until the user has picked up a few tricks/tips and feels confident enough)
4. Isnt another convert to Linux, no matter which distro is used, a good thing?
If anyone is offended by this somewhat naive outlook - go easy on me I really have just started.
.......p.s. The only peripheral SuSe didnt get right first time was my US Robotics wireless lan card...but Ive googled to death and it may be a case of buying a different model..unless somebody knows better!!!!!

Then all you have to do is update aaa_base by hand (or maybe just edit /etc/SuSE-release) and do an Yast2 update, and you have a new version. For free, like beer. Legal too I suppose, if you worry about that sort of thing.

Suse is a good distribution and the linux world is better off with them than without them. Mind you, not that I have Suse on any of my personal machines. They give back as much as they take. I also appreciate their documentation which, at least in the professional version, goes into far more details than one would expect from what I see as the most GUI driven linux OS. I have solved more than one difficult problem most easily and directly from their books.
