Unhappy Suse 9.3 problem (problem fixed ignore post)

You are totoly correct.

The problem was this http:// giovani78 0catch com
The olny way to start a a session was to start xterm and go that way. The login screen was just a grey screen with a login box.'

The solution was this This is from another user:-

If you configure your Monitor, Display, Graphics Card using YAST/SAX,
config files in /etc/sysconfig will be reset from kdm/kde to xdm/twm:
1)
/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager Line 9:
DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm", should be
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
2)
/etc/sysconfig/windowmanager Line 9:
DEFAULT_WM="twm", should be
DEFAULT_WM="kde"

After changing these entries back to kdm/kde,
reset your xserver [ctrl-alt-backspace] and you'll get the kde login
screen.

SuSE is working on this issue, but I've not set a patch yet.

What i noticed today is that when i reconfigure my xorg.conf first and then my display i will not have this problem but if i go and change my display and reboot then this problem comes up.

This sort of thing is hated for the following reasons:
1. anyone searching for SuSE problems will get this as part of the search
2. the "egnore post" is in the message body where nobody can see it without clicking the title - i.e. it is like a sticker which has a sign under it which says "do not remove sticker".
3. you have erased any reference to the problem as well as not posting any solution. This is equivalent to giving everyone the finger methinks.

[Good - you've edited it back the way it should be ...]

Notice how many others picked up on the thread?

Monitor Problems

Hi Guys--

I just found this thread and am having similar problems. I'm brand new to Suse 9.3. I posted here:

I would be so appreciative if you could take a look at my monitor situation and let me know if you have any suggestions for help.

Thanks so much. Mark

Unhappy Grey Screen of death

Hi All

I am totally new to Suse 9.3 and Linux. I have now reloaded my box for three time and now once again the grey screen of death. It seems to happen as you say after playing with the sax2 and the next reboot will stop it. Now I have no idea how to change those xconfig files as all that is up is xconsole. Can someone Please explain how to do it or where to find a explaination as to how it is done.

Thanks

matriexx: did you manage to get this sorted out? If not - did you remember to reset the xserver after the edit?

patrickb: the files suggested are /etc/sysconfig, and you change the entries with a text editor.
