Suse 9.1 GUI will not load: Only command line

Hello, I am relativey new with Linux and hope someone can help:

I have been using a Linux machine at work (Suse 9.1) without any issues until this morning.
On turning on the machine, it goes through it's usual boot process.
here is what is different:

Before the screen with Suse logo comes up, the following message is briefly displayed: Scanning IDE Drives: No drive attached to the fasttrack controller- BIOS not loaded.
Then the Suse logo screen comes up showing a status bar that move along until it is near completion, and then just hangs there.
If I press F2, I get to the command line.
I do not understand why the GUI will not come up.
thank you.

1) check your BIOS to see if your hard drives are configured correctly in the BIOS

2) Close the SuSE logo screen as soon as possible so that you can watch the boot screen for possible error messages.

3) Use this command to display the boot messages and look for error messages:
dmesg | less
