SuSE 9.0 Installation prob.

I have been using SuSE 9.0 for quite a while now. I had no problems until I connected my third Hard drive(Seagate 200GB). In fact after connecting the hard drive it does not boot with SuSE. I had no problems with Mandrakes 9.2 though.

Having tried several things I have decided to re-install SuSE but it got stuck after hardware recognition. As I mentioned before it works fine with Mandrake 9.2 and WinXP.

Can anybody help with this.

I have the following hard drives on my computer.
Maxtor 50GB(3 partitions)
WDC 80GB(3 partitions)
Seagate 200GB(2 partitions)

Thank you in advance.

How are these drives connected? Which IDE ports/master/slaves etc...?
What fs these partitions use? Reiserfs?

Did you try to enter Bios and do a hd detection?

What OSes are installed now?

More info

I have connected the 200 GB Hard drive to Primary Ultra ATA 100 IDE slot. It is the only other primary I have. I do have a CD/RW, DVD Drive and also a DVD/RW drive.

Two hard drives(50GB and 80GB) have been connected using a single connector as primary and slave to primary IDE Connector. Secondary IDE Connector has been used to connect the CD drive and the DVD Drive. The DVD/RW drive has been connected to the Secondary Ultra ATA 100 IDE Connector.

I do have Mandrake 9.2 and WinXP.

That's about it. Let me know if you need more information.

Thank

Sorry friend. I'm having a hard time understanding this setup.
You have a total 3 hdd and 3 cdrom/dvd's?

There's an extra Ultra ata 100 conector, besides the standard two ide slots?

NoviceW 06-04-2004 01:46 PM

Hello bruno buys,

Yes. I do have extra Ultra ata 100 slots. The set up is as follows.

Primary IDE connector
Secondary IDE connector
Primary Ultra ATA 100 IDE connector
Secondary Ultra ATA 100 IDE connector.

My Motherboard is ASUS A7V.

OK, got it now.

Unfortunately, I found no match in my bookmakrs, for this problem. The case is: suse wasn't supposed to behave like that.

"Having tried several things I have decided to re-install SuSE but it got stuck after hardware recognition"

At which specific point, does it hang?

Did you try to enter BIOS and do a hd autodetection?
Did you try to run the 9.1 live CD in this machine? If 9.1 runs fine, consider a upgrade.
Did you pass any parameters to the kernel, while starting a install? Maybe disabling a few options will do.

Hi bruno buys

It hangs after detecting the Floppy Drive. In fact I can see that the green light of the floppy drive is always on.

I did not try to change anything in BIOS as there was no problem running Mandrake 9.2 or Win XP

I did try to make a new installation with SuSE 9.1 1st CD and it seems to be working. But I wanted to keep running 9.0.

I have no idea how to pass any parameters to the kernal :-( May be you could help me with that.

Thank you in advance

Hi Novice!
When you boot the suse cd, do you see an option called failsafe? Did you try to use it? This option passes a lot of parameters to the kernel, trying to solve problems. You can see these parameters, when you select this option with the keyboard arrows.
