SuSe 8.2 FTP Install w/ DSL/ISDN

Has anyone installed SuSe 8.2 using FTP and a DSL/ISDN connection? I thought it would be pretty easy, but it is kicking my ass.
I have tried and tried, and it always asks if I want to use DHCP; if I do it fails, if I don't it asks me for my IP address and the IP for the FTP server, but can't connect. But it isn't even connectec to the Internet yet.
How do I set up a PPPoE connection with the SuSe install so that I may use FTP for installation? Can anyone help me?

Thanks

You can only install SuSE if you are connected to a network. Dialin connections won't work.

SUSE 8.2 install

I'm having trouble installing from ftp. I downloaded the boot.iso file and burned it to a cd. I hooked up a new HD to my primary master, put the cd in and it went to SUSE menu option and I picked install and it loaded the kernal and went blank. I tried manual, no ACPI and safe install with the same problem every time. I have an Anthalon 2100+ with 1 gig of RAM, 80GB HD, Radeon 9800 and DSL connection using ethernet plugged into a 3com connector built into my Nvidia motherboard. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Fulmitz

Cassadaw, try adding a router so that you can select DHCP during installation without proxy.

Fulmitz, is SuSE linux 8.2 live eval CD works flawlessly on your rig? Otherwise SuSE has hardware detection lockup.

actually I am using a router. I haven't tried the live setup cd at all. I guess I'll hook up my other HD and download it. I tried Mandrake 9.1 from cd and it won't load either. Could be my video card or motherboard. Any other ideas?

I Think I found the problem. It's my Radeon 9700 that is incompatible. I tried running it on my office system and all was going well until the manual install. I have an Nvidia Nforce2 mother board with built in 3com and Nvidia 10/100 ethernet cards and don't know what modules to install or how to install them. I thought I picked the correct one, but it couldn't detect the DHCP server setttings. I used an ISO of Mandrake 9.1 I downloaded and burned and it's up and running now. I really wanted to try SUSE though. Any suggestions?

Suse vs Redhat

I'm trying to load it from an ftp also.

To get around the black screen issue, at the bottom you will see F1,F2 etc options in the boot.iso screen. Select F2 and select Text. That should get you to the menu.

My question is, why do they ask you for the ftp site's IP address? And, once you type it in, it asks for the directory. I did all of that, I am downloading from mirrors.usc.edu which seems pretty fast. But once I type in the directory, it says file not found. I did it a million times, so I know I didn't mistype it!

I just want to see what all the fuss about Suse is all about. I am using redhat 9 now and it gives me the least problems out of all of them, including mandrake (mandrake comes close, but it doesn't detect all my hardware like redhat)

Alternately, are there iso's of Suse to install, like the others? Or do they want you to buy their CD's. I wouldn't mind doing that if it were worth it, but why bother when redhat's free and works great?

No ISOs from SuSE .
And the online-install appears to have quite a few issues with several types of hardware:
Since I changed my MoBo last week , I can't install it anymore and the install in place just gave me the good 'ole "Kernel Panic!".

I switched to VectorLinux.(Slackware-based , for those not in the know)

Thanks, that's what I thought. I'm stickin to Redhat for now, but I'm always on the lookout to try another distro. Suse just ain't getting theirs today.
