SuSE 8.2 and Promise 20276 RAID

I am attempting to upgrade my computer from SuSE 8.1 to the new SuSE 8.2. Under 8.1 my motherboard raid controller (Promise 20276) was automatically detected and installed, no configuration necessary (I did need acpi=off specified in GRUB).

When trying to install 8.2, I don't see anything that is hooked into my raid controller. SuSE 8.2 uses kernel 2.4.20. When loading the installer, I see an IDE controller followed by two lines for ide1 and ide2 (the hard drives that are plugged into my raid controller) as well as my maxtor which is separate and not raided. When I get to the actual install screen I see that my computer is not recognizing the raided drives (either raided or individually)

The documentation with SuSE 8.2 says that promise fasttrack raid is supported, and that the pdcraid kernel module is necessary. When I try to load this kernel module from rclinux I am told that it failed to load the kernel module.

What am I missing, or what else can I try? I'm sure that it's something small or stupid.

Thanks in advance for any possible suggestions or advice.

I've installed 8.2 on the one non-raided harddrive, and oddly enough kde sees the pdc 20276 RAID controller. Why if a stupid little hardware device screen can tell that I have a RAID card can't the operating system see. It. I really need to get this RAID working :-(

A new kernel RPM has been posted http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ft...SL8.2-promise/
(this was some time ago mind you) that is supposed to fix problems with promise fasttrak raid controllers. My question to the masses.

1) I have my linus installed with software striping. do I really gain anything by using the "hardware" raid instead.

2) How would I go about reinstalling my system if the new kernel is an rpm. I would have to format my present partitions to use the new raided disks, but in the process I would have to reinstall linux. Loosing my freshly upgraded kernel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
