All advices - compile kernel ... are nice, but first try easyest - update u bios - so speaks SUSE 8 help (try to read it before asking here).
I had same problem on my EpOX 8K3A+.
I updated bois and now shutdowning works perfectly!

I have updated my BIOS, don't worry I did that first. Suprisingly there's no option in my BIOS to allow the OS to shutdown.

Most BIOSes don't have that, mine doesn't and mine shuts down right (my bios is award star)
