su user = server hangup

Hi, ive been having issues with my redhat 7.3 server, i connect to it remotely with SSH.

Im having problems su to users from root, 1 out 3 attempts will cause the connection to hang up, server not to respond. So i have to kill the connection, relogin then ps aux to kill the su pid then try again.

Im running:

Linux Redhat 7.3 with the kernal 2.4.20-19.9 - im also patched uptodate with all vital security issues related to ssh etc..

Any ideas whats causing it to hang?

check

/var/log/messages
and
/var/log/secure

for anything useful at the times you tried to su to another user
