Unhappy Stuck on Shutdown

When I shut my machine down it will occasionally get stuck at:

Shutting Down Interface eth0:

I believe that this has something to do with the network connection.

If it gets caught here I have to do a physical shutdown of the system and when I reboot it has to correct errors during startup. Does anyone know how to fix this?

BTW, I am running Mandrake 8.1

try just running '/etc/init.d/network stop' and see then if you get any info on the interface with 'dmesg'

I have the exact same problem with Mandrake 8.1. My Linux box's eth0 is connected to an Ethernet hub. My Cisco 678 DSL modem/router is also connected to the hub (as are 2 computers running other operating systems). My connection to the internet is via the DSL modem. Everything has worked fine on Mandrake 7.1, 7.2 and 8.0, but with 8.1, the system hangs during shutdown, and I have to power-cycle the machine. Very annoying!

I paid the MandrakeExpert folks for help, but so far they have not solved my problem. I don't know if you can view MandrakeExpert "incident reports," but if so, mine is #6096. I'll try to condense down what I've tried so far. First, I followed the Mandrake 8.1 errata for "The computer locks up when shutting down or stopping the USB service." Second, I tried disabling devfs, which apparently has some bugs. Edit /etc/lilo.conf, and change "devfs=mount" to "devfs=nomount", save the changes, run lilo (assuming you're using lilo instead of grub), and reboot. When I have devfs disabled, sometimes shutdown hangs when shutting down anacron, instead of when shutting down eth0. However, if I try to shutdown eth0 myself ('ifconfig eth0 down'), I get the same hang as before.

Here is the output I get when shutting down *without* devfs:
Shutting down interface eth0
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 1
usb.c: USB bus 1 deregistered
usb.c: USB disconnect on device 1
usb.c: USB bus 2 deregistered
shutting down anacron
clearing the current IPVS table
[hangs at this point -- doesn't appear to take interrupts]

Here is one more piece of information. My Ethernet card is a Netgear FA311 fast Ethernet card. It has worked with previous Mandrake releases, using the natsemi and pci-scan modules. There is, I believe, built-in support in this release. However, the last message I got from MandrakeExpert is this (note that I didn't actually find anything on the netgear site to indicate that there was a different driver to try than the one I'm already using):

"Seems there are some diffuse problems with netgear cards and 2.4 kernels. Perhaps the new (nov, 1, 2001) netgear linux driver can be of help. Try it
It's aimed at RH 7.1, but they say it should work for other 2.4 kernel-based distros ... Good luck"
