stubborn partition table

I got this problem with this Seagate ST32532A hard disk, 2.5 Gb, ATA. I can use it and format it alright in DOS/Windoze, but cannot use it in Linux.

I've formated it several times with FAT and Ext2 filesystems using Partition Magic 4. However, when I boot into Linux (Mandrake 9.1), it says:

ldm_validate_partition_table() Disk read failed.

then takes a long time to load Linux. Then in the Control Center the mount points' module complains about the partition table being too corrupt to be read. The error is: "unknown partition table format on disk /dev/hdc"

I try to create FAT32 and Ext2 partitions in the disk, but DiskX fails to write the partition table without providing any reasons.

I've used DOS' scandisk and found no errors on the disk surface, though Partition Magic only once found 5 bad sectors that disappeared after formating the disk.

What's the matter? I've used this same disk two years ago to install Slackware and Esware Linux without problems.

This is the output of dmesg (the last part, because it contains several lines exactly the same as these):

hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdc: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, LBAsect=1, sector=1
hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdc: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, LBAsect=1, sector=1
hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdc: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, LBAsect=1, sector=1
hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdc: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, LBAsect=1, sector=1
ide1: reset: success
hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hdc: read_intr: error=0x10 { SectorIdNotFound }, LBAsect=1, sector=1
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 1

zero the drive (from a rescue cd) and then use cfdisk to re-partition it...

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdx

cfdisk /dev/hdx

then try formatting the linux partitions with a more advanced filesystem, like reiserfs...

just my two cents...
