Streaming Audio
 

Howdy folks,

I'm using RH 7.1, and use Opera and Netscape for browsing. The problem I'm having is that I can download mp3's OK, but I cannot seem to stream them. When I'm at MP3.com, for example, and click on a streaming music icon, it goes to a text page with the link printed on it (http://www.mp3.com/l;asdjf;lasdjf;asdjklf.m3u). MP3.com suggested using XMMS for linux users, so I downloaded and installed that OK. But still no luck with streaming media. CD's play fine, as do downloaded music files. But no streaming. XMMS has an area where you can enter the URL of a file to play, but that doesn't work either.

I had a similar problem recently. In KDE, under Preferences/Sound, if your Sound Server is set to automatically start, you may have to un-check that box. That solved it for me, anyway. HTH

That didn't exaclty work, but it gave me an ideal that's working for now. I use Gnome, and what I did is under the control panel I checked both 'Enable Sound Server Startup' and 'Sound for Events." The music file still doesn't start streaming, but instead the page jumps to the before-mentioned text link. But now I can paste that link into XMMS and have it play, which is better than nothing. I heard that Music Match has a new linux player out, so maybe I'll try that.

Hmmmm... I've tried Music Match Jukebox, which is an awesome player. But still no luck with streaming audio. I just get jumped to a new page with the text link, and an audio player isn't even called up. Same deal with Opera and Netscape. Do I have to set up a file association of some sorts?

Any ideas?
