Strange Downloading Problem

Maybe someone here can help. I have ADSL at home with speed tests around 700-850kbs. The home network is a Speedstream ADSL modem-USB to the Win XP Pro machine-Ethernet to the Linksys hub and distributed to 2 Windows machines and a Mandrake Linux box via Ethernet.

I have this strange problem which started last weekend. I decided I want to experiment with another Linux distribution and tried to download Redhat. I tried from the main site and several mirrors. I seem to only get to the connecting screens for the most part. Sometimes I get to the download screen and nothing seems to be happening or the speed is only around 6kbs. I Also tried Caldera and Slackware. Same type of problem.

In addition, I have been working on another two machines and have tried to do Microsoft Windows Updates on them. Next to impossible as I cannot seem to get the files downloaded. I cannot connect or there seems to be a bandwidth restriction.

I have tried with all machines including the Mandrake box. In Galeon it comes up with a message that it cannot connect or servers are full or busy. Doesn't seem to matter what time of day.

Yet I can go download picture files within seconds. Norton Antivirus updates, a couple megabyte in minutes. I am surfing just fine and way faster than 56k modem speeds. How can downloads of Operating systems and updates be affected and not any other large files? I also did the update on Mandrake but it told me that everything was the latest version so I was not able to experience a problem with that function. I also cleared temporary files, cookies, and cached files.

I realize I am also speaking of Windows boxes and that's not everybodys cup of tea, but I am trying to move away from that system if possible. I just need to get some more experience with Linux and be able to figure out how to get things done. So I can only think that maybe I should bypass the network and connect a box to the ADSL modem and see if I still have this problem. But if anyone has ever experienced a similar downloading problem and solved it, please let me know.

Had some problems the last couple of days speedwise.Seems to depend on the server.ibiblio was extremely slow, even timed out.You should try something close to you - not physically but pipewise and if that goes well try screaming at your ISP.

Thank you for the quick reply. I had hoped this wouldn't be too far off topic and perhaps others were also having the same problem getting to the download ISO's. Perhaps part of the Internet was having difficulty. I am searching for more info and have found a few people also having trouble, but nothing widespread. I have also talked with my ISP and they seem baffled.
