Stopping/Starting X session as a regular user

Two questions:

1. Is there any way for a regular user to open an Xterminal window and log off, ending his X session, and returning to a console "login" prompt? Assuming that is possible, how could he then log back on with a new X session?

2. What command would I use as root to cleanly terminate such a user's active session without rebooting?

killing the X server usually does the trick, tho, it will only return to the shell the X server was started from (so it sometimes will return to login prompt, specifically if you use a graphical login prompt)

Logging in usually starts a X session, if not, "startx" will start X (hehe, get it?).

That is exactly NOT the answer to my question which has now been knocked off the zero reply list. Very irritating.
