Stop Apache Server from generating index pages

How can I stop apache server from generating index files if none is present in a directory? If some tries to access for example, how can I make it automaticlly re-direct them to Also is it possible to make a special 404 error for images, for example if someone tried to access a page that wasn't existent they would get one error, but if they tried to access an image, they would get another?

-Thanks in advance.
