startx fails after sitting overnight

Hello all,

I have recently installed RedHat 8.0 (was previously running RH 7.1). I have a strange problem now. Generally, startx works fine, except when I leave for the night and then come back the next day. Then I get a blank, black screen when I try to startx... until I reboot. After rebooting everything is back to normal.

I did stop some services that I thought were unnecessary and changed the hostname before I noticed this problem. So perhaps I brought it on myself?

After I get the blank screen and do a ctrl-alt-bkspace, there are no error messages on the screen. Once there was an error message that there was an error starting the gnome settings daemon, but that's hasn't been consistent. Does this sound like an XF86 configuration problem? Or something else? Any input or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rachel

Well look into ACPI/APM settings, looks like your system doesn't come back from sleep.
