startx and rhel as4

i am using redhat as 4. defaul runlevel is 3 , when i use startx command , system starts x server but system hang. if chage runlevel using grub to 5 , boot up properly without any error or making any problem.
any one know about it
?

Is there your window manager specified in ~/.xinitrc ?

X is started by gdm when you use init 5, not by startx.

So, use should either specify your WM in ~/.xinitrc or use

Code:

gdm

command to start X.

hi eugrus:
i have some problem with GDM. some time ago ,i configured my rhas4.0 with fvwm, the X ENVIONment dinn't enter.
now the matter is that when i enter my name and password ,prompt that "
it is inner error....
can you help me .
i think you are familiar with GDM or boot process.
