Unhappy Startup problem

I bought a cheap computer from Fry's electronics for my kids a while ago and it was working fine, but now I have a problem on start up!

When I power up the computer, I get what looks like a DOS prompt like this:

Linspire Linux on tty1

Yo mamma login:

When I try to enter something I get the "Yo momma Login: after hitting the enter key!

Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks!

Thumbs down

I'm going to find another Linux help site. I'm totally blown away that nobody even tried to offer a suggestion!

Personally my first move would be to ask the kids what they did to it. It looks like somone has been 'trying out' their technical skills.

Mgundy,

Thank you for the response! Of course, nobody will confess to the crime. I was just wondering if there was a way to start the computer in "safe mode" or some other way similiar to windows. I would hate to have to buy a new computer all over again and God forbid, install XP as an operating system!

Linux can be started in Single User or Command Line mode which looks just like a DOS prompt. This allows you to access the system and do a lot of maintenance or recovery but it does require a fair knowlege of Unix.

It looks to me as though this is the mode you are in now. To be able to do anything you will need to login as root. You should have been given the root password when you purchased the computer.

Once you are in however I'm afraid I won't be much use to you as I'm not familiar with your variant of Linux.
