Startup fail sits at Desktop background

When I start my Ubuntu 8.1 up, it sits at the desktop background but doesn't load anything else. It is running on VMware ad boots through GRUB. Any thoughts? Solutions?

P.S. I tryed fsck and repair packages in the boot recovery menu

Is this recent behaviour, ie. it was working but has just begun misbehaving? If it *was* functioning properly but no longer is, then it could be an issue with Gnome.

I haven't used Gnome in a long while, but iirc the solution may be to backup and move your .gnome2 folder, and let gnome start anew. You will have lost a lot of your settings, but you may be able to restore them by moving stuff from your archived .gnome2 folder.

Again, bear in mind that I am giving this advice from memory - and I was a child of the 60's, so ymmv.

cheers,
