what is the best way to clear up the startup services, to make it boot faster. i don't mind the terminal, in fact i prefer it, but you might want to tell me a way in X just in case i get confused. thanx in advanced.

Well what distro are you running ? Usually you just need to edit your rc scripts in usually the /etc/rc.d directory. Just uncomment the services in each script you don't want to load at boot time.

For example, http or web server, dns, samba... etc..

Actually with Redhat, you could use the command: setup to select what services you want running and what not.. see if that works for ya.

You may enable/disable services upon bootup by using the chkconfig command. You need to login as root (either su or su -) then run this command:

chkconfig --level <runlevel> <service> on/off

e.g. To disable samba on runlevel 3, 4 and 5 upon bootup, run this command:

chkconfig --level 345 smb off

To enable it again, run this command:

chkconfig --level 345 smb on

For more information about chkconfig, run:

man chkconfig
