starting & stopping services/daemons

I have created a symbolic link for a service/daemon/whatever. It works perfectly, starting up automatically everytime the pc is started.

This is the problem - Is it possible to stop and start this service/daemon while it's running in the background?

How?

I'm kinda new to linux so forgive me if this is a dumb question

would typing this in command line work? - /etc/rc.d/(service/daemon name) stop/start/restart

Yepp!

to start:
/etc/init.d/service start
to stop:
/etc/init.d/service stop
to look at status:
/etc/init.d./service status
to restart:
/etc/init.d./service restart

under /etc/rc.d/ are the start-scripts (S*) and stop-scripts (K*) per runlevel

i tried that command but it just starts another one instead of stopping it!
