Starting a new Linux Job (need advice please)
 

Hi,

I was offered a new position as a network administrator in a very large telecommunications company, I am going to be helping the senior administrator because he says he doesn’t have enough time to deal with all the things you know a network admin has to do all day.

They are eager to give me the job and the salary is very good. However, I feel a little scare I am not up to the job, It's not like I am that big Linux guru or anything yeah, I know this sounds stupid, but I had never worked in such a large network environment before, I am very nervous, I need some words of advice from you guys I know there are many of you who are working in very large corporations.

i just started a new job as a "linux developer" last week with a fairly large company/network (they're a nation-wide ISP) and it is a little overwhelming at first, but don't let that bother you.

it sounds like your job is a pretty nice setup. i wouldn't worry about the size of their network... as long as you have the basic principles down, you'll be able to learn quickly and reach a nice comfort level in no time.

Well..if they are going to pay you, they must think that you can do the job so ... you can. No new job is easy. Ask them for the support you need (books, time, people to ask etc.) and you'll be fine. Good Luck! Sounds fab!

There's a first time for everything.

don't worry about it. 2 weeks into my previous job, i ended up accidentally deleting the entire 'live' directory of our web server. don't think it gets and worse than that. but my bosses still kept me around and later on, when i had proven myself, they even complimented me on my work. just live and learn. ;-)

and don't delete the wrong stuff...

one of the best ways to learn is LISTEN TO THE OTHER NETWORK GUY.

Don't worry, as I believe that on the job training is provided. Few years back, when I just graduated from polytechinic, I went interview for a IT job with FedEx. They wanted to train me for 6 months, 6 months of 'training'. Do you know what? That training is a self-learning which means, I go to work from 8-5 basically I go to work just to learn UNIX before I really kick-off IT support. At that time, I didn't even know what's a unix nor I knew about the break-down flavours of unix and I thought that UNIX was universal the same. Too bad, due to some reasons, I didn't accept the job at all. I just started to pickup Linux sometime early this year and i find it easier to pickup comparing to Unix.
