Start up and shut down problem with Gentoo
 

If I'm in windows, I shut down, tell it to restart the PC and after the usual time, it kicks into the grub menu of gentoo or windows.

So I select gentoo, then after all the boot up dialogue has finished, instead of offering me a Graphic login, I end up with an level 3 login (even though I'm pretty sure that I told it to start at level 5), now if I just enter, predictably I just re-display the level 3 login, If I type in user or root, It usually starts the GUI login mode.

Similar in reverse, if I tell it to log out (the shut down option seems to have disappeared somewhere) from KDE I just end up at a level 3 logged in status, and have to SU to root to be able to reboot.

What do I need to look at/change/whatever, so I only see the graphic login and when it shuts down, it shuts down all the way or if I want to restart, it shuts down then restarts to the grub menu ?

I appreciate that its probably just something that I've got configured incorrectly but I'll be blowed if I can work out what it is?

Check out /etc/inittab thats where you tell the computer which init level to startup in, also you can do "rc-update add xdm default" which will start up the GUI Login Manager that you specified in /etc/rc.conf

Yes the default runlevel in the inittab is 5, the rc.conf has kdm as the "DISPLAYMANAGER" and the "XSESSIONS" is set to kde-3.3.1

but it still insists on doing what I described in the initial post - I can only presume that I have something else set incorrectly

any other ideas would be much appreciated.

p.s. if I tell the system to do rc-update add xdm default, it just tells me that it's already set and is "skipping" that.

I'm not sure what a Level 5 login does, but im pretty sure if you try level 4 it automatically starts your login manager (kdm or gdm or w/e)
Try changing it to level 4.

I managed to screw things up in "glorious fashion", a couple of days ago, so for the moment I've installed knoppix to my hard drive, so at least I've got a working distro!

I'm planning to re-installe the gentoo, planning being the operative word. To make sure that I get it right (well really to make sure that I select the right options).
