I have Star Office 6.0 beta

1) choose "Properties" in the "File" menu

2) Click on the "Statistics" tab

It tells you everything you need to know, such as # pages, # words, #lines, # graphics, etc...

Note: all I did to find it was search for "word count" using help

SO 5.2 is kind of old. You can get the latest release at http://www.openoffice.org

I've got 115kb and it took me ~3h. Just choose a good mirror and good time (night).

If you can leave it downloading overnight, you should be able to get it on 56k.. The program "wget" is a good download manager for doing this kind of thing. It will automaically resume whenever it has to. You can use a parameter that causes it to resume an infinite number of times. Another parameter alows you to continue a paritially downloaded file.
