Star Office

I would like to install Mandrake with Star Office on my main (and for right now only) computer, But I use Office 2000 Pro alot for work, how well does Star Office translate or does it even translate .doc files? Also do I have the correct office suite or do I need a different one. Thanks in advance.

well, star office does a really good job on translating .doc files as far as i have seen and used. i actually prefer it over office... unless i am in windows i usually use word perfect for some reason...

Have a look at StarOffice 6.0 beta...does just as god a job as 5.2 and dosn't have that annoying desktop thing.

While we're on the subject of star office 6.0 beta, I could use some help getting it to work. I downloaded it and installed it, and it seemed to install fine, but how do I get it to start? I don't know the name of the binary file to run, and i didn't see any icons that it put in my kde menu.

You have to create a link on your desktop or in your menu to the binary file installed in the staroffice directory in your home directory.

Hi there.
I wanted to switch from Office 2000 to Star Office 6.0 so that I could run Linux without duel booting. Most of the .doc conversions were very good, however a few got screwed up for some reason?
In the end, because I use Office 2000 for assignments, I purchased Win4Lin, and that solved all problems.
I hate to admit it, but Microsoft office has a feel all it's own.
But then again, I had MS Office pounded into my skull for the last twelve months or so, and old habbits die hard.
